OVERVIEW

From July 9 to 16, 2022, during the UECT European Week, cycling tourists from all over Europe will be welcomed in Meppel, a city of 34,000 residents located in the province of Drenthe, in the northwestern part of the Netherlands. The German border is only 75 km away, and the North Sea is 50 km away. LOCATION MAP

The province of Drenthe offers typical Dutch landscapes with its canals, windmills, Saxon farms, and numerous picturesque villages, such as Giethoorn (the Venice of the North), located 10 km from Meppel.

Meppel is a historic town founded in 1442, and its many canals have earned it the nickname “Little Amsterdam.”

The pedestrian streets of the historic city center and the Oud-Zuid neighborhood allow you to visit the Grote Mariakerk church and its tower, built in 1422; its two windmills—Molen de Weert and Molen de Vlijt, both still in operation; and the Drukkerijmuseum.

The climate here is temperate oceanic.

ORGANIZATION

In close collaboration with the UECT, the Dutch organizers from the DrentseFiets4Daagse Meppel association and the municipality will welcome you at the “administrative” center, which will be located at Sport Park Ezinge - Ambachtsweg 11 - Meppel (located 1.8 km from downtown), where the following will take place:

  • the reception desk
  • information desks
  • the Federal campground with 8 mostly grassy, fenced-in, and secure sites (total capacity of 480 sites and 200 electrical hookups)
  • food service
  • entertainment.

The Sport Park will also serve as the starting and finishing point for various road cycling routes that will allow you to explore this part of Northern Europe, where cycling is part of everyday life. With three routes (40, 80, and 120 km) available every day from Monday through Friday, plus discovery tours on Saturday and Sunday, these easy routes will take you through picturesque landscapes.
